Recently picked up a few of the Everest CD reissues and was quite impressed with the sound quality. These are no longer available the Vanguard Classics website indicates that they declined to acquire rights from Omega Record Group , and one wonders about the fate and safety of the original master tapes. David Gideon - A thousand thank-yous for this marvelous run-down on the history of Everest.
It offers far more detail than I ever expected to uncover and confirms some of my recollections. This inner sleeve is dated and if memory serves all of these were Bert Whyte recordings and sounded stunning in their day. If anyone can add to this list of the original Everest recordings, and make it complete, it would make fascinating reading. Did every single item come out on CD Paul Goldstein.
Mark Melson. Any recording of "Peter and the Wolf" issued in the U. I remember him as a gentle man with an impish xense of humor. It was hoped Vaughan Williams would attend and supervise the premiere recording of his Ninth Symphony but it was not to be as VW died just before the first session and the recording was issued with a spoken tribute from Sir Adrian. Peter Katin recorded several concertos for Everest and I am most grateful to him for providing some insights into recording these for the label, and for a comparison, his experience of recording the Mendelssohn concertos for Decca.
These took place in the Walthamstow Assembly Hall. Apart from the recording, I only worked with Goossens on a couple of occasions. The next recording, also in Walthamstow, was much more successful. There had been no problem musically about the Schumann but the various opinions expressed by the LSO and Hugo Rignold about the Khachaturian were really quite amusing. Basically, nobody seemed to like it. This was odd, because at that time there were seven or eight recordings of it, and it turned up in a lot of programmes; I played it a lot.
Two snags were 1 that it was hard to find a bass clarinet capable of the lowest notes in the second movement, which were taken instead by the bassoon, and 2 it was even harder to find a flexatone, or rather, anyone who could play it.
Again, the part was usually taken by a glockenspiel. I wanted what the composer had intended it for, and they somehow found someone who could play it, and the bass clarinet. We were subsequently driven to hysteria on finding that the flexatone was totally inaudible. This was an early stereo recording for Decca, made in the Kingsway Hall in , with an extraordinary layout for piano and orchestra. At the time I recorded them, Decca recorded everything in both forms.
They were issued in mono, but Tony Collins and I were invited to the studios to hear what we were told were experimental stereo tapes. However, many are still considered exceptional as recordings. Stokowski discovered bootleg recording s of his Everest records being issued on the Tiara label. These included both his name and the name of the Houston Symphony Orchestra.
He wrote Bernard Solomon at Everest to ask how this could be possible. The composer planned to attend the Everest sessions just as he had attended the earlier Decca sessions for the first eight symphonies. As before, Adrian Boult conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra, but this time he began by recording a tribute to the composer.
In addition, one LP featured historic Melodiya recordings of Sergei Prokofiev and Aram Khachaturian conducting their violin concertos, each with David Oistrakh as soloist. He was attempting to complete a huge recording assignment in January when he fell ill at a session. His condition deteriorated quickly and in a matter of hours he was seized with a heart attack. Everest issued a memorial album to the composer, on SDBR Everest prospered for only a few years. It may have been hurt financially by Whyte's recording the complete Pablo Casals Festival in By this time, Harry Belock owned only 22 percent of the business and the board removed him from control.
Belock who died in left the record business and sold his interest in Everest to his accountant, Bernard Solomon, in The studio and all its recording equipment was sold to engineer C. The studio operated for a few more years as Fine Recording Bayside but was closed in the mid's. The 35mm equipment was absorbed into Fine Recording's main facility in Manhattan. Collectors have determined that the only Everest LPs worth having are those that were recorded and pressed while Belock was at the company.
